    The Royal Court

King Basil and Queen Juliana make a comeback in the Plew castle.

    And I need suggestions...

Any good ideas for handmade gifts for couples/adults? Kids are easy. I'm just drawing a blank for a few people. My goal is to have Christmas gifts done by Thanksgiving. I know, lofty goal considering my hormone-induced lethargy. Hopefully I'll either be able to pull up my bootstraps or it will go away soon. Come on second trimester! Any suggestions for motivation on chores when your feeling woosy?

One of the nicest homemade gifts I ever recieved was polar fleece socks in wild crazy colors.

There are several different styles of patterns can order. Some people like the Green Pepper

Or there is one with a ribbed cuff that you can get HERE

You can even order the fleece

However, I order everything online because I live out in the boondocks where there are no stores! You may find a better selection at your local fabric shop.

...how about some special pillow cases? soft fabric...small hint of embroidery at a corner to personalize... and maybe a couple of bees-wax rolled candles (or homemade candles of other types?) gift-wrapped in a recycled bag (brown or white), with ties of live lavender or orange (ooh..with holly?)....

Your kids have so much fun. :)

As for presents, homebaked cookies and other delicious treats are always nice, as long as they aren't something weird like Crunchy Raisin Nutmeg Alfalfa Cookies that people will accept questioningly yet politely, saying, "Mmmm, that's interesting...", take them home, and promptly feed them to the dog, only later feeling sorry that they subjected the poor dog to that.

I'll take chocolate chip myself. :D

I don't know that I would attempt to learn it with small kids around....but maybe sometime when your husband is home to keep the kids away.

I have been making homemade soap for a few years, and really enjoy the creativity that can go into it. You have to deal with lye (if you're going for the *real* homemade stuff, not just melt and pour) which is dangerous to work with, but with the correct precautions it is very easy to do it safely. Once you get past that, the rest is very easy and fun and with just an hour or so of work you can have 15 or 30 bars of wonderful handmade soap. I've made lavender soap, I've made a soap that's supposed to repel insects (did it? I don't know, but it was pleasant to use) and my favorite is the chocolate swirl soap. I found someone to sell me 16 oz. of pure chocolate essential oil and it is wonderful.

Anyway, if you go this route you will have all your adult gift needs done in one go. It does take 3 weeks for the soap to cure, but you've got that plus until Christmas. You could knit a washcloth to go with each bar, if you wanted.

Oh, I forgot to say: here's the book I recommend to get you started (actually, the only book I've used for soap making):

I knit scarves for people. Can you knit? It helps me spiritually also because I practice saying Jesus Prayers for each knot.

Last Christmas I received a 4x6" frame photograph of an outdoor market produce display, which my aunt took during her travels in Croatia.

It's simple, but I really like it. You should have a "photo day" with the kids, take pictures of them, or of local pretty spots... then see which ones turn out the best, get some prints (enlarge 'em, even) and frame them. Goodwill is a fabulous place to find used frames (and if you don't like the color, just buy a can of black or white spray paint--done!).

Last year I made my in-laws a hand-sewn ornament with some scraps of cordorouy and felt. They really liked it! It was just a small trinket, but those kind of things mean a lot.

Also, wallets, little hand bags, and funky little decorative pillows (good idea Momma!).

I'm going to try to make some gifts, too. We can be ambitious together!

I have similar ideas as the others, I love crocheting wash cloths in wild colors and giving half a dozen to someone as a gift. I make them extra big for men to use when washing the car:+) But I really wanted to write to tell you that we heard constantly in the car, "Bye bye Basil....bye Basil" "Luia-Basil...." Luia is translated to Church in Andrew speak. Our school is called St. Basil, so when we pull up to it and say it, he again laments, "Basillllll" Hopefully it won't be 3 years before we get down there again for them to play. :+)

We got the Thrift Store - and pick up cookie tins. Then we spray paint them and do block prints and fill them with treats. I have made stencils of my children's hands and spray paint them on the tins.
